98sohc with 5-speed automatic. I am {still trying to} drop the pan and change the atf/filter. I have already mounted a remote filter in front of the cooler. I'm going to put a drain plug in the pan to make future changes easier.

Since I have the remote filter up front, why should I install a pan filter? I don't ever want to take this pan off again. Any and all opinions are appreciated. I'm wondering what could happen if I just leave the pan filter off and take good care of my remote filter.

Also, any tips on getting the exhaust pipe off to drop the pan? Those nuts are impossible to reach.

Thanks!

Um no, you cannot put your trans back together without the filter
First of all the pick up for the fluid from the pan is part of the filter, so with no filter the trans will get no fluid = you go nowhere.
I am sure there are other reasons, but that one right there is good enough.
Do not even consider it :)

^^^ What he said X2

In fact make sure that you get the correct filter assy because the 4wd pan is deeper and you need the longer pickup tube with 4wd.
