2005 Explorer has had a problem for about a year. The left front wheel engages
at will. At first I thought it was because the rear wheels were loosing traction
but for the past year it has been an intermittent problem. The left front wheel
seems to engage to provide user with a 3 wheel drive vehicle. Sometimes it is
so sudden and severe that it creates a dangerous handling problem. When the
front left wheel engages, it pulls to left with a considerable force. Took the
vehicle to the Ford dealership where I have purchase several vehicles to get it
tested but they said there was no problem that they could find. I can make the
vehicle act as described by spinning the wheels while in reverse gear and the
shifting into drive. Travel forward on a paved road afterwards and the condition
exists for about a half to a full mile before the front axle sometimes makes a
very loud bang and then goes back to normal. My explorer has the advance
trac button on the center console. It does not seem to matter if the advance trac
is activated or not. It still acts the same. I hope someone can help me out with some suggetions or solutions. I can't beleive I'm the only one with this problem.
