1992 Explorer-

My left rear turn signal and brake light is not working. Turn left blinker on, steady light on dash no sound of relay clicking. Left front is turning on and right side working fine as well. Replaced bulb, still dead.

With flashers on I can hear what I think are relays clicking in left rear side compartment where jack and windshield washer fluid is housed.

I recall smelling something burnin (real slight) last week and I hope it wasn't my wiring somewhere.....

Is it possible the relay shorted out (burnt?) and where is this located? I always thought the relay was on the fuse box under the dash? What are these "clickers" in the rear and could one of them be my problem?

It's -10F here and I was hoping somebody could shorten my troubleshooting time in this cold!

Thanks in advance for your help!

One adder- My left turn trailer light works fine when hooked up to the harness on my truck.....

With front and trailer connection working fine, it seems so much like just a bad socket on that rear. I would think that if it used a relay, the relay would feed all three spots, and the rear and trailer together at the least- after all, who knows what kind of trailer lites someone may have.
Do you have a volt/ohm meter. If not, buy one, amaze your friends and etc. Check the socket for power. That will take about 15 seconds. You'll know for sure. Remember 12VDC and the outside of the socket is negative. Scratch around with the meter probes in there (while staying on the right parts) to determine if its just corrosion- thats about another 30 seconds. If so, clean it. No power- check from the high side "bump" in the socket to a good vehicle ground- like your trailer ground. If power is there, your socket needs regrounded.

Hi Sink,

Just returned from a chilly lunch (with my Ohmmeter in hand and frosted over....).

I had a corroded / busted ground wire that headed into the socket.....I do have voltage across the GND and "Major" input to the socket. Looks like some of the famous Minnesota salt made its way into the area and ate it away. Previous owner may have peeled it back a ways and made it a marginal connection as well. I'm going to try to get into the socket and solder her back together....

Thanks again for the input and have a great day!
