Lets analyze this (control trac transfer case) LONG

TPLYNCH
you're right. My settings are 2WD->4AUTO->4LOW. I refer to 4 HIGH when I have the selctor in 4AUTO and the TC is engaged.

So, since the t/f case will only engage *and remain engaged* when the system senses the wheels are slipping, your problem most likely is the system is sensing slip when none exists, keeping the 4x4 engaged on dry surfaces. I stick with my initial thinking. Have the speed sensors checked first. That's the simplest/cheapest fix, so I'd start there. Good Luck!

P.S. Find another mechanic. I may be mistaken, but I thought the front ends on '95+ were in contstant motion since the 4x4 locks at the t/f case (no more auto-hubs). If it were your u joints, you'd hear the popping noises whether in 4x4 or not. Please correct me if I'm wrong anybody.

That's correct, Tom. 95+ front ends are in constant motion.

I've got a 95 and have problems with the 4wd system engaging in 2 wd. As part of my diagnosis, I ripped into the front drive shaft between the front diff and the right front wheel. There is a vacume operated shift collar that engages the front wheels to the front driveshaft. The front driveshaft is not turning all the time. From what I understand, this vacume collar locks the front driveline in and then the tc's clutch activates and runs power to the front driveshaft as required.

Can the clutch be replaced in these?

My problem is in Auto, High or Low under any kind of torque. With the wheels off the ground it works fine.
