So today I went to Wally World and was gonna pick up some MERC V and discovered they had none...:scratch::scratch: instead they had MERC VI? It made no mention on the bottle about compatibility with MERC V so I went to O'Reilly..... Same story, they had none. I asked the guy and he said that MercV is discontinued. "Naw" I said..."Too many ****ty 5r55e's out there for them to cut us off: LOL" He said that the MercVI is the next gen syn fluid and that it is compatible with all previous MERC V Syn Fluids...

Well needless to say at a mere $6.00 a QT I went BACK to Wal-Mart to loot all the $3.75 per QT "Super Tech" Merc VI I could get.

What gives? Are Fluid engineers trying to make my tranny leak cost me a second mortgage?! Does anyone have a better breadth of knowledge on this fluid change. I even asked my buds at Valvoline O/C and they hadn't heard about Merc VI yet.

Mercon whatever is usually just an improved fluid that is compatible with previous Mercon standards, so you can use Mercon VI in anything that specs Mercon. Same thing for Dexron ATF. They do seem to up the price on newer stuff, but not always. Might be a good time to stock up on the Mercon V stuff if that's the case, but it could just be that the generic Super Tech is still stockpiled in wallyworld's warehouses and it'll be awhile before they are selling any Mercon VI, but the price will be about the same.

What the hell are you guys talking about? There is no such thing as "Mercon VI." There is simply regular ol' Mercon, and Mercon V. Are you talking about Dexron VI?? If so, that's an entirely different fluid for GM vehicles. Dexron is a registered trademark of GM, and Mercon is a registered trademark of Ford. When referring to fluids for Fords, you should always call it Mercon, not Dexron.

The links ragajungle posted are about 4 years out of date. They refer to when Ford stopped licensing regular Mercon, and Mercon V superceded it.

Mercon V is the stuff to use, Ford still licenses it, and it is still made by every major oil company. It is available in synthetic blend and full synthetic versions.

The reference thread is old, but it doesn't change the fact that when I was at Oriellys to buy MERC V ------they had none------ they had Merc VI . I am sure of it. I also saw DEX VI. I origionally posted b/c I wasn't sure if MERC VI is okay to use in my truck requiring MERCV

i bought mercon v at autozone less then 1 week ago, mercon v is the only merc available accoring to the parts guy.

You are mistaken. There is no Merc VI. What brand was it?

Maybe I am nuts :confused::confused::confused: But the guy at O'reilly in Arlington Heights swore he just clearanced all the MERCV out to make room for the MERCVI -- He had two QTS of the O'reilly house brand of MERCVI on the shelf... I'll stop today and get a QT and pic it (unless----that is, I AM, In fact, totally nuts)

Your not nuts...

EDIT: Here is another brand.
http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9012227&contentId=7028225
What I did notice is neither lists VI as a replacement for V. BUT. its listed as Dextron VI and Mercon V as different products

I mentioned Dexron VI in my previous post. I said there is no such thing as Mercon VI. Dexron VI is a completely different fluid from Mercon V and has NO business being used in any Ford transmission.

Dexron = GM vehicles
Mercon = Ford vehicles

What confuses it so much is probably that the old fluid you would use in the ford transmission (after type F of course) was a Dex/Merc bottle so everyone (including myself) would consider them the same thing.

They are definitely not interchangable though.
