Explorer Forum Covers the Explorer ST, Explorer Sport, Explorer Sport Trac, Lincoln Aviator, Mercury Mountaineer, Mazda Navajo, Ford Ranger, Mazda Pickups, and the Ford Aerostar
Shocks for STs will ne either exactly the same as ones for other Explorers, or behave very similar (perhaps the mounting is the only difference). Either way, I would search because shocks have been discussed previously.
In 2005, I had Sears replace the original shocks on my truck with Monroe SensaTrac shocks. After 70,000 miles, they are now worn out. According to the Monroe Warranty, Monroe says they will warrant any worn out shock, for any reason.
However, Sears WILL NOT warrent them unless they are leaking or broken.
In talking with Monroe, they now acknowledge that Sears will not warrant their shocks for wearout, and they are done trying to work with them. Monroe says to try and see if any other local shop will honor the warranty, and if not, then have them replaced, and Monroe would pick up the cost of the shocks after I return the shocks to Monroe. Monroe will pay for shipping them back.
So, if you go to Sears to buy Monroe shocks, expect a problem if you think they are worn out, but are not broken or leaking. According to Monroe, this is the ONLY retailer that they have had this problem with.
I have the Bilsteins on my '04 ST, which I swapped at 30k since the stock shocks were already toast, and the difference was surprisingly great. The Bilsteins ride stiffer than the stock shocks did, but the ride quality is vastly improved and the truck feels far more secure both in turns and when going over potholes/expansion joints.
I had Gabriel Ultras on my old '95 Explorer, as I went the cheapskate route on that truck, and while a vast improvement over the 125k mile stock shocks, the $30 price for each was a bit high since they only lasted another 20k miles or so (I then traded it in on the ST).
Also, if you look up at the top of the forum section listings you'll see a section called "Explorer Ranger Bronco II Product Reviews", and there is a section for shocks under "Suspension for Stock Vehicles".
Fox shocks are often more uinversal - so a review of such shocks will probably be aimed more towards design and build quality because such shocks can be revalved - which means ride quality is more about how the shocks is valved. As such, a Fox shock for a Raptor will probably need to be revalved considering that a typical Explorer has a different suspension travel, ratios, and weight.
The Fox shocks on the Raptor are, if memory serves, custom-made, vehicle-specific, remote reservoir triple-bypass race shocks that have very little ties to any shocks that us mere mortals can afford (I've heard rumors of the Fox shocks on the Raptor being over $1200 a piece, though I haven't been able to verify that anywhere). Ford and Fox are quite proud of them... http://media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=30844
