Have you tried replacing the 194 type stock halogen bulbs inside the housings yet?

Welcome to the Forum.
You say that when you unlock your Explorer the driver's side light for the license plate comes ON? I believe they should only come ON when you turn the lights ON.

Actually on my 19 limited the plate lights come on whenever you open or close the doors. I would imagine they do as well, when you unlock the doors to.

You could be correct. Being the only driver, I've never checked back there when I unlock the doors and get in. In that case, when the member said that neither are ON once the vehicle is started, then that would be correct/normal would it not?

Just verified they come ON when I unlock my Aviator with the fob but then it also has the 'Approach Lighting System' that turns the lights ON when you approach the vehicle.

I just pulled up the 2012 Explorer Owner's Manual and according to it, there is only 1 license plate bulb and it is shown as a W5W.

My 19 has 2 plate bulbs. Odd if the 12s only have 1.

That is what the Manual says but then the member said only the driver's side comes ON and not the passenger side. :dunno:
Hopefully the OP will respond.
