I have a '98 Ford Explorer XLT. A few days ago my wife noticed that the rear lift gate made a poping noise when she opened it. the top of the gate was hitting the roof. It now will not open at all. when closed the locking mechinism mismatches by about 1/2" and the top of the gate is about 1" away from the roof. This changes the geometry to prevent it opening more than about 1 foot at the bottom.
I noticed some metal cracks about 1" away from where the hinge attaches to the lift gate itself on both sides of both hinges.
I see very little if any distortion in the place the hinge is bolted on.
Do I need a whole new lift gate?
Any ideas will be welcome.
