Here some back ground on my issue. I was driving on the interstate when my head gasket blew. By the time I got over to the side of the road the engine had over heated. I tried using "Blue Devil" to fix my blown head gasket. About 20 min into the test (letting the truck idle with the heater on full blast) I lost all oil pressure. I went ahead and removed the heads had them check for flatness and for any cracks, everything okay. I replaced all of the gaskets and the fluids and started the truck. I know have a loud lifter noise from the engine. I cleaned every part before putting it back togather every thing looked okay. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I check?

Did you check for oil pressure again after you put it back together? (using a real gauge, not the dash)? I know it took a good minute or two to get good oil pressure when I first started my motor after the rebuild.

Yes, my oil pressure is good. I have between 55-60 PSI. I was told by a friend to pull my vlave covers and check to make sure I'm getting oil thru my push rods. I will be doing this tonight. Thanks for your response. Any other ideas would be great.

If you have an OHV motor (which has push rods) then pushrods (at least on the '92) are not hollow. Oil doesn't come up through them.

As far as I know the SOHC motor doesn't use push rods so if you have that motor, you don't need to check pushrods. I don't know for sure though.. I haven't started to look into the sohc motor yet (its in our mustang)

Is the motor running smooth (other than the ticking?) I had a pushrod come out of the cup when I put my rocker arms back on which made it run rough and loud (I don't remember if I heard ticking or not, it was a while ago).. I know on the first gens (OHV motors) that the rocker arms and push rods to wear and there are kits for replacements (Delta Cams is where I got my last set from).

Im having same sort of noises but not sure if its lifters or crank noises
trucks got problems gettin on da hiway does yours have same problem ?

does anybody know where i can get a good motor for my 91 explorer ? or should I jus rebuild the one i have ?

now that you said that, I do remember the push rods being solid. No the motor is not running smooth. It has a rough idel and seems like it is missing. I did get a P0125 code from it. I'm going to replace my t-stat tonight.

I have found a couple of OHV in junkyards with anywhere from 60,000 to 80,000 miles for around $700.00.

I just removed my valve covers. All of my push rods are in the cup of the rocker. But I do have one push rod that is loose, that makes me believe that I have a collapsed lifter. Should I replace just the one lifter or replace all of them.

Double check the pushrod length and check the cup on the rocker arm. If either wears too much it'll be loose. Its about $200 for a set of pushrods and rocker arms from Delta Cams..

The lifters aren't cheap.. and the only way to pull them is to pull the heads.. I looked at replacing them when I rebuilt my motor last month.. but at $40 each I decided against it.

I used some JB Oil tune-up in my 98 XLT. It freed up the sticky lifter and allowed it to pump back up. No more noise.

Okay I have a new question. My 98 XLT is running great once again. The only issue that I have is when I put the excelerator down to get it to kick down into passing gear, nothing happens. This started after I replaced the head gaskets, not sure if I missed hooking something up.

thanks for all your advice but I took my truck to a mechinic and he told my it was bottom end now I wish it was only lifter noise but we all cant be that lucky now the question is do I rebuild the one I have or find a better motor ????

I dont know enough about rebuilding an engine so I cant help answer any of your questions its bad enough that my mechanic is going to cost a small fortune oh well I love drivin my eddie so I guess I got to .. cant I jus get a 302 v8 for it ????
