my 91 explorer has 164,000 on it and the lifters are starting to get some slap to them, the engine is still strong, do I need to have the top end redone now or just try to replace the lifters that are slaping, also are these adjustable???

Its not lifters. It is worn out rocker arms and galled pushrods. All the parts can be bought for around $200. That includes rockerarm/rockershaft/pushrod kit, upper intake gasket, and valve cover gaskets. If you have any mechanical skill at all you should be able to do it in about four hours. The above rocker kit is available from DeltaCam.com.

let me knoiw if that works for you ! My 91 XLT has 131k on it, and is now just starting to tapp. Don't want to part with my baby! Just put new starter on her, and recently had 4x4 work done. She sure is faithful to me! I was thinking the cam needed replacement?

I was thinking I needed to do the same thing. Then yesterday I was driving with a buddy and he said it wasn't rockers but an Exhaust leak. News to me. I'd rather replace the exhaust gasket anyways and get some headmen headers

watch out... i thought i had a lifter problem... well basically, it turned out to be that i bent a connecting rod, it finally let go on the freeway.... no more engine...

Hey all its me again, I called the delta com company and they seem to have a good handle on things there, They described my problem to me the sounds and frequency of the tapping, I orderd a new kit and plan to install it myself. Thanx to all for the helpful tips I will keep all posted as to the results. THANX!

Are you guys sure thats what his noise problem is? My 92 has 216k and I only get top end clackety clack when there isn't enough oil (complements of blown rear main).

I've also heard that it can just be a matter of bad oil filter (too restrictive = not enough oil flow to the top end?)

At any rate..too bad about the Convertible, jimabena74..that thing was great.

hello all, I just got my kit from delta cam installed, Thank for the recomendation, I done the work in about 6 hours got all back together and no tapping. new push rods and rocker assy for 160$$$ and a saturday afternoon not bad of a fix Thanx !!

cool... glad that was the problem, and now you have more experience under your belt

I have a ticking noise that I think is the injectors, but could it be the rocker arms?

Does the noise go away as the engine warms up?

JC - thanks for coming back and sharing your results with us. Much as you appreciate the help and suggestions, it REALLY helps when you come back and let us know how things went. Good job guy!

Happy Exploring

Chris

The injectors do make a clicking noise. The easiest way to tell if it is injectors or something else is to get a mechanics stethoscope and put the tip on one of the injectors. Then you will be able to tell if that is the noise you are hearing.
