i was just wondering if anybody has tackled a lifter job on their 4.0 OHV. since ford had the bright idea of using hyd. rollers they cost me 50$ a pop brand new a piece.

anyhow, i was just wondering if it would be a fairly easy job cuz this is my daily driver and only vehicle on the road right now.

Are the rollers bad on them or are they just ticking? if the rollers are good, you can clean them very easily, small coffee can/soup can with solvent, use a push rod and cycle the lifters by hand or chuck the pushrod in a drill press and cycle the lifters a few times.
done it many times, it works. normally lifters start ticking long before they actualy go out, it's just that they get crud built up that doesn't let them seal correctly and start bleading down which is what the ticking is from.
if you want to get seriously into the clean up, get a baby food jar for each lifter, and tear them apart and let them soak, very easy, push down on plunger, pull clip, reduce pressure and the plunger slides out, remember the order of the parts, reassemble, then do the cycle process to flush them.

very simple and and saves a few bucks.

saves a lot of bucks that way lol i was floored when ford told me 50 bucks a pop. i need to do it soon. i got about 3-4 ticking. its not that im losing power it just gets a bit aggrivating at times. and when im not thinking about it, ill freak out and think ima sling a rod

thnx for the help

It's a fairly easy job. The only part that sucks is that you have to remove the heads to remove the lifters. Or at least have someone hold the heads up for you while you pull the lifters out.

they wont come out with the lower intake off? :S

You can pull the lifters out without removing the heads. If your having ticking or chater its more than likely worn rocker arms.

forgot to say that it's better to refill the lifters with oil after cleaning them, use a can of oil and cycle them as with the cleaning.

I had an old willys back in the early 80's that had chattering lifters, and found that they were odd sized and pretty much discontinued, at $65 1980 dollors each I decided to try cleaning them instead, worked, since then I clean before I replace.

Maybe they can be removed on your engine without remove the heads. I know on mine, the heads were blocking some of the lifters from being removed. You can ask Siekyre, he held the heads while I removed them.

Now that I think about it, I think your right only some of the lifters are able to be removed with the heads still on.

Never seen a write up on cleaning them before so I searched and found a couple pages that could help.

here's a link to a page that has a small section on cleaning lifters.
He mentions ressembly under the oil to exclude air, but after assembly it can be purged by cycling it in an oil filled can. If you try to assemble it when full you need to have a press to do so, as you are trying to compress the oil inside

this page has a decent exploded view of a lifter down at the bottom.

this is a ball valve type, many lifters have a disk instead of a ball, make sure it's installed with the same face up.

haven't found anything on roller lifters, but normally the roller is just a bearing, and the rest of the lifter is the same as any other.

as with any lifter/cam project, put the lifters back in the hole they came from, they wear into each other, I've heard conflicting opinions on this regarding roller tappets, some say that it doesn't matter where they go, but I figure why find out on my engine.
