Light in 97 door keypad

is not working. Any ideas other than springing $100 for a new keypad? What makes it light up, anyway? A bulb? LED? Magic?

It was explained to me that it is a "tape" light, kind of like the indiglo stuff in watches ? so no real bulb or LED, same stuff that lights up keypads on cellphones etc... That being the case, I believe you have to replace the whole thing.
