im guessing my(up and down) idling problems are because of a vaccum leak...now how do i go about looking for the leak?

Start at the vacuum tree and make sure all hoses and plugs are ON. Then follow them out from there. Listen for a sucking sound.

just one possibility for thought look at ur ac compressor when it goes up and down may be ur low on freon

Start with the visual and audio inspection. If that doesn't work, you can use ether (starting fluid). VERY CAREFULLY (very small amounts at a time), spray some ether at the vac lines while the engine is running. You should hear the idle speed change if the ether hits the leak.

thanks alot guys....ill take a look today. It might just be low on freon because my a/c doesnt blow cold at all!

What does low freon have to do with a vacuum leak or idle problems? If your freon drops below a certain PSI the pressure switch on the A/C line will kill power to the A/C clutch (basically preventing it from coming on when you don't have enough R12 or R134 in the system. Otherwise you would seize the compressor...

OK, now this is getting interesting...

Are you really having idling problems, as in, does it happen when the a/c is off? If so, that could be a vacuum leak (could also be other issues).

If it happens only when the a/c is on, as DeRocha mentioned, you may be experiencing the a/c clutch engaging/disengaging because you are low on freon. This would have nothing to do with a vacuum leak, but would be a sign that you have a freon leak.

Theoretically it's possible that you have no freon leak, and that the idle is goofy only when the a/c is running and putting additional load on the engine, but I would rule out the two items above first.

its constintly running like that when idling.....i dont have the a/c ever on because it doesnt work! previous owner didnt really care i guess... the explorer is mostly for off-road and going to be my winter vehicle so its not a big deal about the a/c.
