My 2001 Explorer Sport won't turn over. I don't hear a click, nothing. I'm trying to locate the starter solenoid so I can test the starter with the old screwdriver across the terminals trick. All I can find on line anywhere are fender mounted solenoids on older models. I've spent the afternoon trying to locate mine and can't find it. My problem is twofold. First, I don't know what it looks like exactly and second I don't know where to look. There are a ton of pictures and youtube videos showing the fender mounted ones that talk about how they changed the location in the late 90's but nothing I can find with a newer model like mine. Actually I wouldn't call a 2001 newer but mine is definitely not as obvious as the ones I see on line. In fact all the pic and videos I see don't even show the battery in the same place as mine. My battery is located in the front of the engine compartment on the drivers side. If someone has a picture of where I can find the starter solenoid I would be very greatful.
Thanks..

The starter solenoid is actually mounted directly to the starter. I believe you are referring to the starter relay, which is often mounted to the fender on many vehicles. On 2nd gen explorers it's mounted under a black plastic cover on the side of the black fuse box under the hood, near the driver's seat. You should notice some large wires running to the mysterious black plastic cover. Squeeze the clip together and pull up to rotate the cover open and expose the terminals.

I would post a picture for you but I don't have privileges.
