Lockers

the lunch box lockers like lockright, aussie and i think detroit has one now require and open diff they go inplace of the spider gears.

I had a lock right once maybe 6 years ago maybe more it lasted about a year and then started slipping under acceleration. the teath had worn down to were they would not grab. i beleive they were bought out after that by richmond and i here quality is alot better. im weery 90% of its use was street.

you can get lockers if you already have a limited slip its just more expensive.

nice one and what i would get.

mine has the small hitch but i thought it had limited slip, if it does not ill probable try an aussie.

after my old lockright bit the dust i went to a auburn aggresive limited slip it was about 80% as good as the locker and no chatter etc.

Wow thats a big investment, I would love to have one tho.
Thanks for that info, I'm gonna look at the front too. I've heard that its a dana 35 right? Any other info needed for it? like how many splines or open carrier????

Yeah I think it transfer power between diffs not each individual wheel.

I think Jeep has a system that can do that but I am not sure if anyone else does.

if you have a LS you don't really have a choice, a good locker in that case will be ablout 500 most e lockers are over 1000.00.

the option mentioned earlier is possible of finding an open carrier at a junk yard and doing a full carrier swap.

I would like to have a locker but I doubt I would put that kind of money into it. I have the limited slip and it does a good job most of the time. I know this truck handles snow better than anything else I have had.

By the way if you are thinking of getting one for the front...thats a Dana 35
Nope..Dana 30, standard rotation. They changed from the old AMC/Dana 35 on the 3rd gens.

the one i have been looking at is the truetrac jeep guys seem to like them.
1983-07 Ford Car/Truck Truetrac Differential 31-Spline Axles 8.8'' Diameter Ring Gear Fits All Gear Ratios

thats what i replaced my lock right with. it was pretty close to the performance of the lock right maybe 80% it was the best differntial ive had.

My lockright has over a year on it daily driven and I bought it used from someone running 33s and beating on it. It still operates very well and looked exactly the same when I popped the cover a couple months ago. Power-trax (same company who makes the lock-right) makes a locker called the no slip, a smoother design of the lock-right and is made for LS carriers as well. Detroit ez lockers and quick locks are garbage and you should avoid them.

maybe i just overpowered mine it was on a 300ft lb combo and got plenty of street launches pushing 31-12.50 who knows. i changed fluid religously in the rear too.

i was disappointed enough i know i will try something else.

I never thought there would be this much to choose from. I just want an affordable locker that is also reliable. I want to start with the front locked as this is a dailey driver.

If it's a daily driver you definitely want a selectable locker up front, I personally would not lock the front of a daily driver. As for the rear, Lockright is a great little lunchbox locker. They are easy to install, cheap, you don't need to re-shim the carrier or the pinion, they are near bullet proof, you can do the install yourself with just a few tools and they are very user friendly on the road, just a little ratcheting noise when you turn, but most people never even hear them.

Why? The front locker makes absolutely no difference in 2wd.

Thats why I wanted the front locked, it gets no wear with daily driving. But now I'm confused a bit, I've heard dana 30 and dana 35 both on here. I called Ford and they said neither it was a sterling?

True, except that most if not all 3rd gens have 4 wheel drive auto or AWD, and don't have locking hubs. So if you are turning, its slippery, the front end engages, and you have a locked front something has to give, I don't think that our aluminum front housings would take the stress of a locker.

Unless you swapped a 9.75 or 10.25 rear under your explorer from an F-series the 3rd Gens are Dana 30, pre 3rd's are Dana 35.

Here is a copy of the page in the ford service manual, just in case someone does not think it is a 30.

That says it's for the AWD, I wonder if there is any difference for the 4wd versions...

Well, all I can say is, here is a page from a 2000 explorer, it says Dana 35 AWD. I know that all 2nd gens were 35's up front it didn't matter if they were AWD or not.
