well that doesnt look good and i would address this by means of a rebuild

well hang on.. i assume you have the SOHC engine.. so those parts and pieces you're seeing there are probably just from the timing chain guides falling apart

jackshaft chain tensioner

I can't tell for sure but they look like pieces from the jackshaft timing chain tensioner. I would pull the valve covers while you're waiting for the balancer puller and visually inspect the upper ends of the left front and right rear chain guides. If the rear guide is shot then you'll have to pull the engine to replace it. If you get an engine from a wreck, the timing chain components could be in the same condition. They have been known to fail as early as 45,000 miles. See the following thread for an example:
SOHC V6 Timing Chain Saga

Seams to be a lot of this going around lately. I think I'll go outside and talk nice to my tensioners.

Lets see where this one goes.

Don't use a 3 jaw puller

hmm..
Thanks for that link!
Seems as though I've been REAL lucky to see it last this long.
Does anyone know exactly what puller I need? I don't know if a 3 jaw puller would be good because there appears to be a rubber "buffer" ring on the pulley that would take all the lateral force.
you said a "balance puller"? Would the folks at autozone or alike know what that is?
Sorry I'm a novice backyard mechanic.
I'll go take the valve cover off the left side real quick and post some pics.

If you use a three jaw puller on the harmonic balancer/damper then you'll just rip the outer section off of the inner section and only accomplish destruction of your balancer. Your local auto parts chain store will have a balancer puller kit. You'll have to purchase extra long bolts because the SOHC V6 damper is very deep.

Can't recognize that piece

I can't recognize the plastic piece that you're holding between your thumb and finger. Do you have 4WD or 2WD? If you have 4WD it might be part of the balance shaft chain guide but it's unlikely that it found it's way to the left head top. Most likely it came from the left guide assembly but it just doesn't look right. If you click on My Helpful Threads in my signature you'll find a link to Rear Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement that includes a brief description of the timing chain system with photos.
