With 162k miles you are entering the dreaded water pump ground, you can do a search on this forum. Verify early signs of water pump failure, get a trusted mechanic to check on that. At that mileage you also need to service the transmission and you are at risk you waited too much, manual calls for 160K, it´s recommended to do it earlier, I did a fluid replacement at 80k and the oil was already black but didn´t smell burnt, transmission runs perfectly. At the end I wouldn´t advise you purchase this truck with that many miles unless you can be sure it was well maintained, you could very well be buying a time bomb money pit.

I got my 13' explorer a year ago with 96k miles on it. With any used vehicle, there were a few cosmetic things that needed replaced. Sense then ive put about $1000 into it cosmetically and $400 into the engine. I love the vehicle overall and yes there is still a few more things I would like to do soon. Now I have a slight hesitation in the tranny (110k miles) and am going to flush the fluid and replace the filter.

Btw, the 3.5L FWD is a great motor/transmission if properly maintained

I would pull the tranny dipstick and wipe on a clean white paper towel or cloth. If it has mostly pinkish color and it shifts smooth I wouldn't worry about the tranny. I would do a flush or 5 drain and fills with several miles between when purchasing. Maxlife full synthetic atf at Walmart is a great deal at around $20 for a gallon so your looking at $100 and about 10 min at each drain. If it has no pink and is brown or black I would pass or price in a tranny rebuild. Water pump can be an issue but I've put close to 200k on several and no issues. If it needs one and you have to replace it will probably be 1200 to 1500 at a local mechanic so not too much more than a timing belt required on many models at around every 100k. If you ever see a coolant drip or notice the coolant level drop get it checked asap just in case it is the waterpump. Great cars. I have had many fords and never a significant problem other than the brakes on one edge and after I gave up on the dealer and addressed myself it wasn't a big deal either. No brand or model is without issues or risks. If the 13 is a 4cyl ecoboost the waterpump issue doesn't apply.

I got a 2013 on December 20th with 136K miles. I haven't driven it that much yet. It is an XLT with some options but generally factory stuff. I have been happy with it so far. I'm going to change out the tires, new shocks and a front end alignment.
