Hi all, I'm new here. Looking at buying a 2002 explorer eddie baurer edition next week. Wandering what I should look for? It's got the leather seats, moon roof, in dash 6 disc cd changer, 4x4, V8, etc... Has 85k miles on it and price seems good. I'm new to suvs and would like to make this deal go smoothe. Does this year/model come with a lot of problems? I noticed there were several recalls for it. Also, what kind of mileage are you guys getting with your v8 explorers?

Thanks all,

Kyle

I see there is a lot of probs with 02s. How do you find out if common probs have been corrected? I'd really like to buy this 02 but do not want a bunch of probs.

Why does the price "seem" to be good? What are they asking? Dont worry about any problems with it, you can fix em all.

They are asking a little under 10k. They are giving me really good trade in value on my car. I'd really like to get the explorer but starting to question it now that I've read about all the problems people are having. The last thing I need is a money pit.

If it were me buying it I would buy the longest extended warranty I could get on it. My old 2002 had 93,000 on it when I got it and when it was wrecked in Janurary it was having the trans problems and the whine in the rear end.

I bought my '02 about a year and a half ago with comparable miles to the one you are looking at. It now has 113k miles and I have had very few problems. I had to replace the battery and get a brake job but that is to be expected. The only real breakdown it has had was the ignition switch fell apart. A new one installed by the dealer was a little over $100.

I have the V6 and it has plenty of power for me.

Well, I turned down the deal. They told me they could sell me no warranty and I just don't want to take my chances.

You absolutely did the right thing.
30 days after I bought my 2002 (w/ 37k miles) the alternator crapped out.
A few months later the ABS light came on (and despite my efforts has stayed on). And I also have the airbag light flashing.

I traded in a '99 jeep cherokee that had no problems at 75k miles.
My advice: look at the last couple years of the cherokee.
