2015 Limited
Afternoon all. I usually post in the 2006-2010 forums but am looking to get a newer model used Explorer as the 2008 is getting long in the tooth and starting to have issues. Plus the wife wants a newer vehicle! I found a 2015 Limited FWD with the 3.5L and 42K at a local dealer. They are asking $26.8K for it. I'm sure I can get them down a couple of grand but wanted to see what you guys thought of that price. Also, I haven't done much research on the problem areas of the newer generation Explorers and was wondering if you could give me some quick insight as to what to look for. Any help is appreciated!

I just returned a 2014 ltd 302a pkg with only 26k miles and they are making for 26k, and trust me its in mint condition,

Very first thing I would check is the spare tire area for any signs of corrosion or rust. It's common that the rear body seams leak and water makes it's way into the spare tire well. Check for splitting of the armrest seams on the doors and delamination at the upper portion of the door panel near the window. Make sure ALL parking sensors work - I made this mistake on mine. I tested all the reverse sensors so I thought I was good but the one thing I didn't try was the Auto Park Assist. Tried it a few weeks after purchase to discover that it gives me a fault due to a sensor. Also, be sure to drive over varying types of terrain to check suspension for any creaks/squeeks/groans/etc. Oh, and pull out your magnifying glass (not literally) and check all around the hood area for any sign of paint bubbling.

I bout my 2013 Limited with 302a package (blind spot, auto parking, HID headlights, lane assist, power liftgate, navi, etc) w/ 20" wheels, tow package and sunroof for $30k. Only 2 years old and had 13k miles on it.

Best advice is to not shop in just your local area.

I flew from Alabama to Ohio to get mine but ended up saving like $6000 on what everyone else here was charging.

Before I purchased my 16 I looked over the whole state of Colorado and found that all the dealers wanted very close to the new price on 2 year old Explorers. I ended up buying a brand new one with only 20 miles on it instead of a 2 year old vehicle with 30K on it and got all the warranties that I wanted.

Granted I lost $10,000 dollars the second I signed my name and drove it off of the lot but I personally think that I got a better vehicle than what I could of found on the used market for not really that much more money.

The question you posed about what to check for has been raised many times. The best thing is to scroll through the 'Discussion' and 'IVT' sub forums and you will find the issues that have been brought up. The 2 major ones that come to mind are the 'exhaust smell in the cabin under hard acceleration' and the 'water leak' threads. The 'Search' feature is a handy tool to use as well.
