I went to look at a 94 Sport 5 speed, 4x4 yesterday. Body was in good shape, interior a little dirty with a few torn places but not to bad, no rust that I could find, engine seemed to run good, and had 140k miles. It's got 3.73 gears and limited slip (based on door code). Guy is asking $1500, but will go lower.

Now the questionable. It has electic 4x4. It seemed to work ok in 4 high. When I put in 4 lo and tried to take off, the transfer case seemed to disengage. By this, it was like it was in neutral (couldn't got forward or backward). When I turned it of and then started again, I would be in 4 hi and everything was ok then. Basically, 4 lo wouldn't work. Any ideas as to what this might be?

Doors closed ok, but didn't seem to latch good. You really had to lean into them to get the to close tight. What would it take to correct this?

Supension seemed to be shot. Shocks may have been replaced at some time as they didn't appear to be factory. Basically got a bumping sensation in the rear when driving.

May have some fuel issues as when excelarating hard it seems to miss as iff it is not getting enough fuel. Any ideas?

Any suggestions as to what else I should look for will be appreciated.

TIA

....First, the 5 speed sport is sought after to replace the A4ld tranny by many...

...It sounds like the fuel pump may be on it's way out...

...are the nylons in perfect condition on the door latch post???...If they are, it could be a 6 way hinge adjustment that is needed...

...This may be the problem with the shift motor...:dunno:

Being as where you live, check the rear shackles to see if they are rusted out and also look for cracked/broken springs or maybe over flexed springs...Count on replacing both those items...

...IMO, $1500 may be a bit much especially if it's going to be a beater and, as most off road trucks are, a money pit...I hope this helps...

were you in N when you engaged and disengaged 4Lo? silly i know but its the first and simplest question to ask. the first gen sports are great looking trucks.. glad to see you found w/out rust! i remember when my sport had rocker panels still : (

Yea those electric shift t-case motors are always causing problems, which is why I switched to a manual. But yea I agree the asking price is too high, how much lower is he willing to go.

I wouldn't give him over a grand , you can do way better then that for 1500$. Offer him 700$

...I was going to say $750 but without seeing it it is kind of hard to say...It also depends on the availability of what he's looking for and what the supply and demand is in his area..:dunno:

...Wait a minute, there is an awesome Explorer being sold by a member here and it's a California X that's currently in TN...BRB...

...This is Thunderhorse's X...Tell him I said hey...;)

Thanks for the replys. I'm thinking fuel pump problems. I can't remember if I was in neutral or not when I put it into 4 lo. Could have been both as I jacked around with it a fair amount. Didn't look at the "nylons" on the door posts, but I could check that out later. I am aware of the electric shift motors being a problem. I will read the link this evening. I didn't see any rust in the suspensions, but I can check that if/when I look at it again.

Is there a trick to get it out of 4 hi. I pressed the button and it the light didn't go out immediately. I probably went 1/4 mile to a red light, stopped at the light, and then it went out.

I think he will go lower, maybe less than $1k. I was thinking $750 was a good number.

Anything else you can think of, let me know.

Thanks,

my 2 cents... after looking at craigslist for the past year for explorers of differnet types a 4x4 with mechanical problems in " ok " shape useally go for about right at $1000 maybe as low as $800 ...but of course if it's a eddie bauer model expect $1200-1500 in some what " ok " shape.... just because it's a eddie.

i offer $750 and let them talk you up to $850 ...but no more than $1000 ....$1500 is a tad to high priced.

heres an example of one i just found on craigslist ( good deal btw...wish i had $400 to waste) lol

Naw , mines an eddie bauer and it was only 800$ , only had 127k too (131k now). And there wasn't anything major wrong , just changed a relay , put in a better radio , and fixed the door pins.

So for two less doors ,no leather ,or moon roof , or working 4x4 low, and more miles , he should pay wayy less then I did. Totally wouldn't be fair if he paid more.
