Time to do ball joints on my 94, anyone find a better way to do them? Haynes manual sounds like an all day job, don't know if there's enough beer in the garage...

Its not that bad as long as you have a pickle fork and a ball joint press kit WITH the correct adapter.

Pickle for k is to seperate the tie rod end from the knuckle. typically if you have never done this they are pretty stiff from the factory, sometimes you can get away with a BFH, but dont ***** up the threads or castle nut.

You will need the appropriate hub tool if they are manual hubs, if auto hubs you will have to remove the retainer, I use a magnet.

If you are going to do the ball joints (it is an all day job to do both sides your first time) you mine as well re-pack the wheel bearings (new grease seals) and lubricate and check on the brake pads and slide pins.

You will need to remove everything down to the knuckle, this means the wheel, hub, spindle nuts, rotor, then the spindle.
Once you are down to the bare knuckle you get the nut off the lower ball joint and remove the keeper O ring off the upper. You can drop the knuckle with a BFH, then the rest is straight forward. Using the press press the old joint out, new ones in.

On the drivers side the axle shaft simply pullsout of the diff. Be careful not to ***** up the seal or it will leak, going in or out.

Passenger side the outer axle shaft seperates from the inner shaft at the slip yoke, so you have to pull the boot retainer off. You will want to re-lube this slip yoke too.

Plan all day Sat, your first time. Do it on Sat if you need the truck back on all 4's by Mon morning.

I can get down to the bare knuckle and ready to replace the ball joints in about 30 minutes per side....but then I have done this 50 times.....
