The vehicle in question here is my '97 Explorer Sport 4.0 w/ 5 speed manual transmission.

I'm trying to get this vehicle going again but don't know what's going on with the shifter (hopefully it's just shifter related). A while back I sheared the output shaft of the transmission and had a friend put in a junkyard tranny and transfer case for me. When I moved to my new house a couple years ago I actually drove the Explorer the short distance and I was barely able to shift through the gears. The shifter was hard to put into each gear, especially when coming to a stop and going from neutral to 1st. In fact, I chose to turn the engine off and put it in 1st at a stop sign instead of "slamming" it into gear which felt like the only other option.

I remember signs of this same problem with the old tranny that was in it before although it's quite a bit worse now.

So does anyone out there know what could be going on here?

Thanks!

P.S. Any tips on how to fix the driver's seat in one of these cars is appreciated too. The seat won't sit upright, it tries to stay in a reclined position. Same problem in my '97 Explorer and my Mom's '95 Explorer.
