Well I am a little ways away from being able to turn over my BFG's; I have 16K on them and I have about another 15 or so to go (bought them used).
When I found out that BFG's parent Co. was French I started looking into alternatives.... Namely bridgestone Duelers and General AT's. Any other ideas? I would like to buy from an American company... style/size of tire; AT's probably 33x12.50, no Interco's or other non-highway friendly tire ;)

Thanks for any info.

Come on. You are going to trade tires simply because the brand name is owned by a French company?

Will you boycott Canada too for having french as a second national language?:(

i sure hope he doesn't go so far as to boycott canadian beer, too! if you boycott french products, you have to boycott iraqi oil. and hey, why not boycott german cars and beers? (most french ones aren't worth it in the first place:p) :rolleyes: seriously though, i'm looking into bridgestone dueler revos, myself. they've gotta be THE highest scoring tire ever on tirerack.com they have aggressive tread, they're quiet, handle great in dry, snow, and rain (and i'm sure do fine off-road and in mud), and have a 500 treadwear rating. i know my mind is already made up on those. but i'm going for 31's...i don't think this model comes in 33" with the exception of 285/75/16

No way....Canadians rock. I really should've thought a little bit more before posting this thread on the tire board vrs. the political one... hope I didn't pi$$ anyone off by my implications ;)

Getting rid of my BFG's will force me to try another maker... which isn't such a bad thing. I was also looking at the Dueler Revo's.... they do have an awesome rating... and I am disappointed that they don't make them with larger sizes (well... who knows maybe they'll expand their sizes once sales pick-up). Does Michellin make an AT, besides the LTX and cross-terrain style highway tires?

Michelin is the French Company that owns the BFG line of tires by the way.

You know, first on your list of priorities should be how well the tires will do what you want. If you find two tires that perform equally as well, next should be price. The last thing that I would use for determinign whether or not I would boycott a tire (or anything else for that matter) is if I found two identical products that performed equally as well, for the same amount of time at the same price. Only then would I choose one product over another based on where it was made. You need to only please yourself, and no one else. That being said, my BFG ATs are far supperior to the Michelin LTX ATs that they replaced. The tires have an extra ply in the sidewall, a bead gaurd, a more open tread design and doesn't have those annoying rubber blocks around the outer tread that prevents water from draining out. I'm sure there are tires that are just as good as the BFGs though, but Michelin doesn't make one. They do make outstanding street tires that work "OK" in moderate off-road use.

First off I was unaware that Mich. owns the BFG company! Maybe I was thinking something crazy. Thanks. :)

Robert I totally agree with comparison's of how well (said) tire works and is priced vrs "X" tire.
And I have been pretty happy with my BFG's, they are a quality tire, with great traction in the situations I have subjected them to, however;

I am grossly disappointed in many things. I understand that many companies are not directly influenced by a poor government (at least in my meek view)... and I have decided to do a little more homework supporting some companies, while abstaining from giving others some $$. I am not a 'Buy American' only person, however I have chosen to try and support more domestic companies.
As I said earlier; I should've thought a little more before posting a potentially instigative (if even a word exists) thread.... more than anything;
I need to research tire makers. Dunlops, Pirelli's, Pro Comps, Generals, and Yokohama's all have 'decent AT makes regardless of where the company is located or HQ'd at.

So let me get this straight, you want to get rid of tires that are perfectly fine just because they are French. I'm sorry but I see no point sence you have already paid for them("supported them") and are satisfied with their performance. I'm just a lil confused. Buts it your money, and its what you believe in, so more power to ya!

you already payed for the tires and supported the french people.

my email address is wils0559@umn.edu i am very american. if you want to support america please send me money via paypal. i will use at least 5% of any money you send me to directly improve america (like painting a graffiti flag possibly) which the tire company wouldn't do. I will use the rest to built my american ford explorer up a little more.

and besides i need money for my nittos...

Very Entertaining!! :) You are all correct, they are paid for, not bad either; $550 for 4x BFG AT/KO's and 4x Eagle 15x8 #1179's. ;)

However, I am in the Military, and Yes I do feel very slighted by the French Germans and Russians, let alone Turkey ( who singlehandedly cost us another 15+ days going against Iraq).
And regardless of political connotations; the French explicitly supported the Iraqi regime... supplied intel and equipment to test specifically AGAINST us. Oh yeah and so did the Russians and probably the Germans. And you're right I am not planning on tires or any other item from any of them.
As my wife said re; my BFG's " that's ok, they're being drug through the mud just like they should be". And further, I will definately refrain from opening any politically charged, ideological (or moral) questions or proposals on any open board. It is my fault and a complete can of worms. Thanks to all who replied.
:)

you can send them to me. i'll use them as street tires. :D

I hear ya, didn't know it was French owned per se, but I think you can be more pro-active than getting rid of tires already paid for... they made their money already, so beat the tires up and use em! ;)
Im a vet, buys american when/where I can, but I'm not about to dump my beloved tires, or drain all the bottles of french wine I have in my basement... I'm sure you could write their government, organize something to show your distaste but what I read so far doesn't seem practical.
There are so many reasons to boycott everything you touch these days, you have to pick your battles I guess... just do it intelligently and at minimal to no expense to yourself.
Good luck and G-d bless the USA. :us:

I hear ya... it's the 'choosing your battles wisely' part that I need to learn :) Don't get me wrong, the BFG's are hands down an awesome tire.... but I will be happy when I have them roasted and I can shop for something else.

Maybe I should just wheel them at closer to street psi!!
:D
No.... then again that would probably compromise safety a bit.

:chug: :us: :chug:
