Well let's start out here...which engine? OHV or SOHC? Also, what are the stock gears? (located on inside of the driver side door)

BTW, welcome to the site!

SLOW??

Welcome to the board! and beware of "The Bug". i dont think mine is slow at all from the start, do you know what 4.0 you have. you either have the OHV or SOHC. go pop your hood and see which one youve got, if its an SOHC it will say it on the cover.

THANKS GUYS FOR THE HELP

I HAVE A 4.0 SOHC LET ME NO IF I CAN DO ANY THING THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AGAIN

Ok what is your gearing? It's slow from a start? it must have like 3.55 or 3.27 gears then.

GEARS ??

IM NOT TO SHURE WHEE OR HOW CAN I FIND OUT ?

Look on the driver's side door where it meets the body right by the latch. There should be a code there that is labeled "gears" i think.

GEARS

IM GOING TO GET BACK TO U LATER BECAUSE ITS TO COLD OUT THERE FOR ME TO RUN OUTSIDE . BUT THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP BUT ANY THING I CAN DO??

Welcome Sport! I too am brand new to this forum. My wife and I just bought a 98 4x2 Eddie Bauer Edition yesterday! It's has everything except 4x4, V8 and a Child seat option. Ours is white over Gold lower. An absolutely beautiful truck!

It has the 4.0 SOHC, automatic and has 4.10 gears. It has excellent accelleration/power for a V6!

Look on your driver's side door jab for a white ID label. Under the Trans Code box you will see the following (2) numbers.

For Explorers:

Conventional--

41 3.27

42 4.10

45 3.55

46 3.73

Limited-Slip

D1 3.27

D2 4.10

D4 3.73

BTW, I received this info from FRED on the rec.autos.makers.ford.explorer Newsgroup.

Just curious: what did you drive before your explorer?

The BEST chip on the market right now (Especially for FORD Vehilces) is a CustomChip (www.customchip.com) .

The owner was trained by the infamous "Jerry" the former Ford Transmission Engineer and now Engineer for Roush Racing.

I have a CustomChip (that was burned by Jerry) in my Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. MASSIVE improvement in performance. All the CrownVic/GM, Police Interceptor folks use Jerry Chips/ Now CustomChip.

STAY away from the cookie cutter chip burner companies (like Stupid Chips, Jet and Hyperchip)! You've been warned!! J/K! :p

Also, a big performance enhancer in the chip business is getting the transmission up to high performance specs. Meaning to increase shift firmness, shifting points and torque converter lock-up points.

Tie this all together with additional modifications in engine timing, fuel injector pulse widths/rates gives Jerry's chips (now CustomChip) the advantage over the cookie cutter chip factories.
