I have the 5.0 v8 in my beautiful 1999 explorer. im looking for a way to improve mpg and get a performance increase. I hear headers will do both increase gas milage and performance. is this true? i also was looking into getting a reprograming chip... does anyone have any idea as to what my best bet is?

I am waiting for a free day so that i can take pics and post them on this site! im sure many of you would love to see my explorer i believe it is one of the sweetest rigs around. ill let you all be the judge.. keep your eyes pealed for stevieapollo cuz mind blowing pics will be up soon enough!

Look up "Torque Monster Headers" on the site. Lots of documented cases of great results with those headers on our 5.0s. I've wanted them ever since I got my 5.0 (3 years ago) and that becomes reality in 2 weeks. :D

As far as mileage goes, I haven't seen a lot that adds a lot of mileage gains to the 5.0 other than driving habits. Accelerate slowly and deliberately, don't be too aggressive and use cruise on the highway. That all being said, you won't see a ton of improvement with mods. I personally have air intake setup, custom exhaust and custom programming. Stock 5.0 Explorers felt too "Soccer Mom" like to me. Custom programming definitely wakes up your ride. Check out sctflash.com for options and touch base with James Henson (site sponsor aka Jah81592) if interested. His tunes are top-notch and he's a great guy to boot.

Going with synthetic fluids helps too. Once again, go soft on your acclerator if you want mileage gains. I'm simply not able to be mellow on the pedal for long periods of time and it will probably be worse when I get the headers. :)

Add an Intake Spacer while you are adding TorqueMonster Headers.

It lengthens the intake tracts, giving you a bit more torque at lower RPM's. So you don't need to rev the motor nearly as much to get it going.

Bob @ TM should offer a package deal....TMH's, 1" TrickFlow Cobra Spacer, and an EGR tube.
