Hello. I have a 2000 Mountaineer. It just flunked state inspection due to its loose autodim mirror. The inspection station's solution was to replace it with a used one for $140.

The mounting bracket on the windshield is on solid. The spring clip is mounted to the mirror with two rivet type connections. That is what is loose. Is there any solution other than complete replacement?

get one from the junk yeard or off ebay... if you buy the same exact one all you have to do is unplug the old one, take it off, and put the new one in its place and plug it back in.

I assume when you same it is loose you do not mean on the windshield. I assume it to mean that it doesnt hold in position if you adjust it so you can see... correct?

wow... fail an inspection cuz a loose mirror... glad my state isn't that way... but is there anyway to squirt a little clear epoxy between the mirror and mount to stiffen it up?

Yeah, another thing that failed inspection was the right front turn signal. A little of the amber paint had flaked off the bulb making that part appear white. Not allowed to have a partially white (about 20% for mine) turn signal here I guess. The overall signal still reflects amber to my eyes.

I cut some sheet metal to make shims and wedged them on both sides between the spring clip and the mirror fixture. If that doesn't stiffin it enough for the shop, I'll try the epoxy as you suggested also. Thanks!
