Loss of compression? rolls backwards

The first thing I noticed was that when I parked on a 15 dregree hill, park break off and the manual Trans in first gear, the truck rolls backwards. I don't know if this is related but in first gear in rush hour traffic the truck bucks hard. If I don't depress the clutch or give it a bit of gas I think it would stall. I don't let it get to that point because this has got to be hard on the drive shaft and u joints. Now when I am driving at a steady speed and take my foot off the gas the rpm's drop faster then normal.

The engine only has 146,000 km on it. Could this be anything other then a loss of compression? Should I check anything else? Is it time to drop a 302 in it?

Thanks all

Kevin,
You can check the compression on the engine, but I would look to the clutch first. How long has the clutch been in the truck? It seems like the clutch isn't grabbing the flywheel.

Of course you could always drop a 302 / AOD in there.

Thanks Bert for your reply!
I replaced a Center Force clutch back in September and last weekend had some trans. work done. At that time I asked them to check the clutch and they said everything was fine.

I have noticed the rear diff has some play in it. I have ARB's. Does anyone have play in their rear diff? What I mean by play is I can move the tires back and forth when the rear is on jacks and it is not tight. Does that make sense?

Thanks for your help

How slow are you going when the truck starts to jerk on the road at extremely low speeds this is normal with the manual tranny, eventually you have to push that clutch in Dead Link Removed

Whcih Centerforce clutch do you have? I just put in a Dual Friction.

Run a compression test to give yourself some peace of mind.

Only 10 posts? Where have you been?

Hi Rick well I think I am up to about 20 post now Dead Link Removed I put the dual friction Center force and I have already had it rebuilt. I guess I need 4:56 or the transfer case reduction.

I did the compresion check, all ok. The clutch was checked. I replaced the salve cyclinder and the throw out bearing in the trans. and as of today it still rolls backwards. Oh well Dead Link Removed

Hope you can make it this summer for a run up here
