Had fabulous carfax. Female owner took it to Ford Dealer every 4 months. Only bad was tires were 2011 and all needed to be replaced. If I didn't already own two 1997 V8 AWDs, it would have been a great buy at $1600.

Yeah it sucks, before i got my 96 I tried to bid on a 2000 mountaineer, went for $850 or something had 86k miles but they said it was leaking coolant so I didn't want to bid more. next 3 days I see it on craigslist for 3200 and the flipper lied about a bunch of stuff he did to it, no way he did that much work in 3 days so I flagged him. screw the car flippers. hopefully you don't see the one you wanted on craigslist soon if you do let me know i'll be happy to help you flag it.

CarFax reports are pretty meaningless. This is because they only shows repairs that were "reported to CarFax". You are more likely to see CarFax reported repairs on newer vehicles than you are on a 23 year old vehicle. I'd stay away from anything older that maybe a 2000-2001. The newer models received transmission updates and cast iron headers replacements, which are preferable.

So was this an Ebay auto auction? I found a gem (to me) but the guy wasn't responding to contact info on Craigslist....'THEN' I just happened to find it also listed on Ebay.....thought it was in the bag - got outbid at last minute and had gone higher than I initially wanted to..... but happier that I ended up with Ex I have now.... although still needs some work but it's drive-able....

Koda2000 good to hear from you again. You have always been knowledgeable and responsive. .I agree that in general they are pretty meaningless because most independents mechanics dont report to Carfax. Dealers and national chains do. So in the case of this car I could see everything because owner took it to Ford dealership every four months for service..

It was an estate sale. Person had died. Not eBay. Gen 2 V8s are getting harder to find. Still plenty of V6s.

Humor for the day... The thread title interested me so I openned it up and read it... HaHaHa... I STARTED IT THREE YEARS AGO...

and now $1600 would have been a song and dance, 110K on a 97 5.0 I would sell a truck like that for $5500-6500+ in this market I did just that last year sold a gold 97 with 99K on it for $5000 it was CLEAN by the time I was done with it. Still see it around town

I'm glad I ended up shipping my 2k XLT back from WA. I had someone interested but they wanted me to cut the price due to some bogus list of repairs from a sale inspection. Like no....$500 off since the hood takes a longer pull on the handle than desired to pop the hood? Glad at the time I said take it or leave it as later I just bent the bracket back in shape up front and that tiny issue was solved.

Likely worth double what I was asking years ago.
