So, My 2001 Explorer Sports 4.0 lost oil pressure today at 95k Miles (Sucks.) And I want to keep it but want to modernize it, Are there any other engines minus the 5.0 That would be able to bolt up to the 5r55e? or would I have to transmission swap as well?

If not I'll probably try to get a later model 4.0 out of a mustang

The 2.0L ecoboost would bolt up to the 5R55E If you changed the bellhousing to one used on the 02 up 2.3L engine used in the Ranger. That would change the weak link from the engine to the transmission. The new ecm wouldn't be able to control the existing transmission so you would have to use a standalone controller. If I was doing this project, I'd look at the 2.3L ecoboost and 6R80 combo out of a mustang. Tuners can delete all the modules that are not used on an engine swap so you don't have to use the Ford racing control pack.

Thank you, The ecoboost was my main interest as well for something like this

This is good to know, Time to start putting some cash away 👍
Is your explorer 2wd or 4wd

That's actually a very reasonable price for what you get. You could retain the 4wd if you so desired.

I noticed that, Would the factory transfer case work though or would I have to swap that as well? I have no idea about this kind of swap

Swap the transfer case. Adapters are available for the 6R80 to mate the 5 bolt transfer cases to the transmission. I haven't looked at the 10R80 to see if the same adapter would work.

Well here’s a update that really isn’t good, had to drive it to work today and the Chrck gauge light came on

Are you sure the oil pressure switch didn't fail?
Quite at this point, It’s now Clattering going down the road, I think I’m gonna go till it blows up and find another motor which for the 4.0, Very plentiful around my area

Drive it with one leg out the door, ready to jump ship.

Id bet money you have plastic blocking the oil pickup tube mine did this same thing a few weeks ago and it was very simple to fix

I had a 4.0 OHV do this. Timing chain tensioner is hydraulic, and partially plastic. When it breaks all your oil goes out and back to the oil pan through it instead of the rest of the engine. Does the clattering sound like a bag of hammers swinging around in the block? That's your connecting rods banging on the crank journals since the lack of lubrication has by now destroyed the lead bushings in the con-rod ends. Running it like this will destroy your crank and con-rods next, and possibly the rest of the engine. My engine is still sitting in the barn waiting for a rebuild with new crank and con-rods.

Be sure to check the oil pressure sending unit first. It is just a pressure switch set at 5 psi (I think) - mine failed and it looked like no oil pressure but wasn't.

I had the faux gauge in the dash stop working in my '95 OHV.
