Loud AC compressor?

last summer i had to replace my ac compressor. or rather the mechanic at the garage talked me into it. something about the price of the freon. anyway - since then, when my compressor cycles, it is a pretty loud and annoying ticking sound. is this right? the ac works, not as well as when it was the other kind of freon, especially at a stoplight, but otherwise all is well. thanks for your help.

Are you sure he replaced all the seals and such that are required with the new refrigerant?

Other than that, your clutch could be going. Listen to the compressor in the engine bay yourself while the vehicle is running. If it is grinfing when it kicks in, you have big problems.
