For the past two weeks or so, I have been noticing that whenever I turn the wheel all (or almost all) the way right or left, there is a loud bang. It sounds like it is coming from the drivers side, but I am not sure. I would describe it as sounding like two pieces of steel hitting together. It does not matter if I am turning the wheel slow or fast, it still sounds the same. It feels almost like there is a tension that is let go when the wheel is turned far enough.

Any ideas of what this could be, or if it is a major problem?

Thanks!

If this bang occurs with the vehicle sitting still, then it should be pretty easy to diagnose cauz you can have someone turn the wheel while you get under the vehicle and find the source.

Most noises involved with steering are severe and "major" as the steering is of course very important.

I have looked under while somebody turned the wheel, but it does it intermittently and when it did make the bang, I could not see anything or could not clearly tell where it was coming from

I will try again tomorrow

Things to focus on while under the vehicle are the tie-rods and of course the rack and pinion. But one more thing that popped into my head is the steering shaft -- so pop the hood and maybe give that steering shaft a good shake to see if its loose or something.

...this might be a long shot as this happened on my 91 X but my problem was a loose brake caliper...it would pop or bang on turns if i was moving forward or reverse....i hope this helps as it is a quick fix...;)
