93 sport
I have a 93 sport with about 165+ miles. 2 weeks ago I thought a caliper was hanging up and a tire was dragging. no drag on the wheel when turned by hand. it change pitch with speed so i assume it is after the tranny. brotherin law said it is the chain in the t-case but not to worry about it. won't hurt it. but I don't know. please help

thanks

tom

Did you check the wheel bearings & the hubs? I don't think its the transfer case.. Usually you can hear a ratcheting in the transfer case instead of a wine/groan sound.

Yes I checked the hubs, bearings every u-joint in the truck, front and rear housings, changed the oil in both the housings, etc. It sounds like the truck is riding on 35 inch MT's instead of 235/70r14's. any other suggestions?

Rear pinion yoke?

I still suspect either your autohubs are toast = locking the front axleshafts up and the front drivetrain is spinning to the T case, or your front wheel bearing is toasted on one side, when you say you "checked" the wheel bearigs what do you mean?

For a noise that only happens when driving here is what I do (and did yesterday, again)
Put the rear axle up on jack stands, tires in the air. Make sure you support it properly, dont need any dead people. Chock (sp?) the front wheels, have somebody carefully get in, start truck, put it in gear or D and start spinning the wheels slowly.

If the noise is not there, guess what you just narrowed it down to the front end, not the engine/trans/t case/driveline or rear axle.

If noise is there you should be able to puin point it.

And for gods sake point the truck away from anything it will run into if it hops off the jack stands, and dont go climbing under it unless you are like me and made damn sure it wasnt coming off the jack stands.

if its the pinion the noise will be high pitched.

if its the carrier or wheel bearings it will be low pitched

you can narrow it down to the rear wheel bearings if the noise changes while negotiating turns.

manual tranny? could be the output shaft bearing going bad.

the stock manual tranny seems to have a common track record of approx 170k miles

teh jack stand test is your best bet to find where it is/isnt coming from.

Funny you should mention that... Reminds me of a certain ex-girlfriend on jackstands.... Rear's up, front's chocked... Maybe 4WD works....
