I know everyone says stay away from low-end audio i.e. Pyramid, Legacy, etc. I have a Pioneer HU with Phoenix audio 3 ways in the doors, and Pyramid 3 ways in the rear. Sounds real good to me. I want some more bass so a sub, and amplifier is needed. I am biddind on a stealth box by MTX on e-bay. As far as an amp, I found a Cuspid U.S.A., 1600 watt amp., with a 10" sub, both for $55.00. I don't need a system to thump and rattle my truck. Oh, yea, I listen to rock ONLY. One more detail to just let y'all know a little more about me, I am 53 years old and had a "Lear Jet", under dash 8 track while in high school. I have installed new systems in each vehicle as formats have changed from 8 tracks, to cassettes, to cd's. Just looking for good sound quality, not to entertain my neighbors. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanx,
Just an Old Hippie

while you can usually get a decent sound out of lower end speakers and you can get by with cheaper headunits, an amp is something that i would personally not really skimp on. The tend to do things like catch fire. This can be bad in the back of the truck. Maybe get something, not spectacular, but a little higher up. just a thought.

a crappy amp will ruin a decently moderate system....

cheap amps tend to catch fire uh? :hammer:

cheap amps do NOT tend to catch fire otherwise 6 outa 10 people with stereos would be reporting there vehicles as fire loss dont spread **** like that please theres enough real reasons to not chince on the amp

even the worst amp i have owned has a heat shut off

I have had legacy aps and subs, I was really impressed with the amp. U.S acoustic. makes really good cheap amps too.

tell that to my buddy whos amp caught on fire

My first amp was a cheap power accoustic. I sounded ok, but the signal was not very clean. When I upgraded to an orion amp, the difference was night and day. The higher end amps will send a cleaner signal and power to your speakers and/or subs, the lower end ones will send a dirtier signal and power to them.

alpine, jbl, audiobahn, rockford fosgate, phoenix gold, any of these brands are good and have fairly cheap amps. Just stay away from the sony's.

i like lanzar for cheap amps

u know what give me his email addy and i will...just because one cheap amp burst into flames doesnt mean they all are going to combust..how many fords burst into flames? :hammer:

I'll agree that you should stay away from cheap amps because the sound quality and durability, but I would be really surprised if one of them "caught fire". The most an amplifier is going to do is smoke like crazy when the components go. I guess if someone took off parts of the aluminum case off, its possible that a frying component could spark a fire in the truck.

The more likely scenario is that there was a wiring problem that caused the fire. Never underestimate the need for fuses -- they can be the difference between a vehicle with no sound and a vehicle with no interior.
