Hello all.

I own a 1993 XLT with 194000 miles.

Mileage is terrible. Maybe 180 miles to the tank.

Every now and then when I turn it off and get out I smell gas, but no leaks. When the truck is running, I don't smell it.

Ideas?

Shoot! 180 is decent for me and i got a '93 2wd with 146k. I have heard of people getting great mileage and others getting horrible mileage. About 2 weeks ago i was getting 140 miles on a tank and then i found out i had lost a bunch of radiator fuid. Fixing that seemed to help but i dont know if that was really the solution. I'm sure someone one here has better info than me

I know of 6-7 1st gen EXs and right now they are ALL get between 11 & 13 MPG. Mine was getting 11 MPG steady, now I am getting 13-14 MPH. The only thing I did different was turn my heater from floor/defroster to floor. The A/C may have been comming on when in floor/defroster dropping my mileage. Probably not. What I think happened is that the oil companys have changed over to summer blend gas now and thats why I am getting better gas mileage. I haven't talked to the others that I know to see if their EXs are doing better now.
IMHO look for gas leaks, keep it tuned up and running good and keep the bad mileage. I have analized all the mods and its too much money to invest in to gain a few MPGs. But thats just me. I would do a few of the free mods (do a search here) clean the MAF for one. Then I would change the fuel filter, complete tune up if needed, change to a k&N air filter and if you want to spend the extra money I would say get a good catback exhaust system (catback will probably cost $400.00-$500.00 installed). You should only gain a couple of MPGs but you will have a great running EX. Check OR have your 02 sensor and fuel pressure regulator checked to see if they are working properly.
I will probably do all the mods eventually just to have a good running and dependable EX. Especially the exaust.:) I like the rumble sound. LOL!

when was the last time it had a tune up? new plugs wires and coilpack?? (don't know what they used in 1993). Check all the sensors, and finally properly inflated tires. All of that should give you a boost or at least run better.

Wow! I get about 325 from a full tank, if I only got 140-180, I would walk:rolleyes:
I think I averaged 17.1 mpg, no mods.... im getting a KKM intake, and a FlowMaster 40 series muffler, we'll see how that changes things.

375? Damn! I will follow up with some of the ideas and let you know how it goes.

Know what? I centerlined this thing last week. It has NEVER been stuck before! Was picking up my kid from paintballing and saw a nice muddy road to travel. Mistake. Stuff was like oatmeal and I sank it. But my brother in law got stuck in has new Chevy Colorado got it worse than me trying to pull me.
