Im posting this for a friend who owns a 1991 explorer. He recently replaced his alternator with a rebuilt unit and replaced the battery. The alternator apparently was faulty and didnt charge the battery.

Now he is getting a battery "idiot light" on the dashboard and his voltage reading is low. Where should we begin checking for problems? Is it safe to assume the battery and alternator are OK? where should we look and what should we check. Im leaving to help him out in 1/2 hour. Thanks in advance.

First thing to do would be to check all the connections and wires, and make sure all your engine and chassis grounds are intact.

If all that checks out you should test the battery and alternator with a VAT machine (maybe at your local shop or parts store, though sometimes the machines at parts stores suck).

Thanks Alec, Anything else you can think of?

Could just be a bad alternator or battery.

low voltage

I just had the same problem. If you have not fix it yet? Then try this. under the hood you have a main fuse box open it up and looking down at it on the left side you will see 2-15amp fuses pull and check the one close to the engine. its proably blown. I had the same problem and that fix it.
