Just wondering especially for the Show Truck guys out there, besides daily cleaning and storage how do you guys protect from rust namely in the space around the wheels and the vitals underneath. I've heard from some that you can find a rust protection spray and get that applied or do it yourself but it dulls your paint job. My dad just said he sprayed Rustoleum on his F-150.

What do you guys do?

Clean it up really good (wire brush, knotted wire wheel on grinder, bead blast, etc...) and put a coating over it (POR-15, or just regular paint).

you could use under body protection, heck maybe even spray bedliner. you can find both at most auto stores. you could also take it to a ziebart dealer. they have all sorts of vehicle protection and cleaning.

I was going to try the POR-15 on any rust underneath and then bedliner the whole deal. POR-15 is supposed to actually stop the rust and not just cover it up.

You can get bedliner in a non-spray can and apply with a roller or brush - it's cheaper that way and I figure there's less chance of it ending in the wrong place. Got to get going though - there's less than 2 months before "rust season" (road salt) starts here!!!

I'm going to be POR-15-ing some spots underneath my running boards. That seems to be the popular product, and seems to be well accepted as working, much better than the "rust convertor" stuff sold by duplicolor. That rusts through after a few weeks.

Two best ways to prevent rust/corrosion on metal is paint or oil. Paint is great on body panels, but a lot of the undercarriage is difficult to properly paint (such as frame, drive-train, suspension and steering components)

There is a product I use on our tractor called Crown All-4. It sprays on like an oil but dries like a wax. I coat the running gear, loader and hitch equipment with it and it's been keeping things pretty clean. You have to re-apply it every so often (yearly) and after washing.

the way I do this is too wash the underside of the truck so it is as clean as you can get it and use some ruberized undercoating in a aerosol can and spray where you want. I'm not sure where they sell it because I just use it at work but I'm sure a parts store will have it.

EDIT: Make sure it's rust proof undercoating.

I take a regular spray bottle and make a 50/50 mix of kerosene and motor oil and coat the entire underside. It sprays on clear, makes everything look kinda wet. Learned it from an old-timer.
Awesome rust protection. After 3 or 4 months I would clean it off with Castrol Superclean and recoat it. That was back when I really cared about my vehicles though.
