I am in the process of putting my '97 XLT 4.0 SOHC together after putting in a crank kit (rod bearing failure after 216K+ miles). I put oil in it and after a few minutes noticed oil dripping profusely from the lower pan/ladder frame joint. I didn't feel comfortable with the way the lower pan gasket sat in the recesses anyway. The question I have now is since I will have to drop the lower pan to clean it up, and reseal it: What is the best way to get it sealed to not leak?
