Try doing a search to see if you come up with some more info. I'm pretty sure there are some threads about lowering a first gen.
If I recall correctly, without major surgery, there isn't much you can do to a 1st gen Explorer. I believe Eibach USED to make lowering coils, but they no longer make them.
I'll let you know once I figure out what suspension I have on my 97 limied lol. It currently looks like a low rider since it sits 2" lower then normal explorers haha.
you can put lowering blocks in the rear. the front has coil springs. i had a 92 and before i put air bags on it, i took it to a shop and had the cut the coil springs.it lowered about 3". i had 4-wheel drive, so the front diff was hitting. but if you got 2-wheel drive, you should be ok.
2"/3" is THE MOST you can drop a 2WD or 4WD 1st Gen without major work. Mainly the rear needs to be C-notched for anything more than 3". AND you have to swap gas tanks to a 2nd Gen Steel Tank, which means swapping the front mount of the tank, and a little wiring.
if you have a 2wd Ibeam truck you can do like a 5/6 drop if you really want to. But 3" ibeams or 2" coils are the only ways to go. Eibach used to make some coils but they no longer do. You don't have to swap gas tanks either I'm not sure why that was mentioned. You wont have to do anything with your stock gas tank unless you are bagging it to lay frame.
