I was just curious if anyone is running a MAC intake on a 4.0 and has any info. I was lookin at them and there pretty reasonably priced. Maybe there priced cheap for a reason. Also looking for a new muffler. Iv heard flowmasters and i know it will sounds good but seeking out some other options. Anybody ever use a Hooker Max flow muffler or a thrush welded muffler? My local shops got a few at a good price.

MAC intakes are good for the price,my friend runs one on his mounty and it works well. no need to spend the extra money on a K&N or other brands, as for a muffler go with a flowmaster 40 or 50 series or a cherry bomb pro or vortex, i run the vortex sounds great on the outside but is a little noisy inside. and do some research on building your own intake, an intake doesn't really consist of much besides a larger diameter intake tube and an open filter. I used some aluminum tube, an amsoil filter, an a MAF sensor adapter from pepboys. it cost me around 75 to 100 bucks and the performance difference was huge, couldnt see how a brand name intake could Create any more significant gains than what i acheived.

oh wow 75 to 100 bucks to make your own, thats not bad. Il have to do some homework on that, if your gonna save close to 100 bucks for similar performance might as well give it a try.

I'd recommend Amsoil EA cone filters if you go the 'make your own' route.

haha I have watched your videos on youtube before of the Max flow muffler, thats how I got the idea. I thought it sounded good, but then again its hard to tell when its not in person.

Ah gotcha! I bought that muffler after I did a lot of homework online. I wanted a muffler that was affordable, created the biggest HP increase, yet had a nice mellow tone. The maxflo fit this bill. I ended up taking it off and putting a Flowmaster Super 40 on. I wanted something loud and throaty, so I was able to convince myself it was worth the 1-2 hp decrease :-p

The muffler sounds pretty good. Similar to a Magnaflow, but a tad quieter. The Thrush Welded is a rip off of the Original 40 series by Flowmaster. A very loud and droaning muffler. I ran one for a while, but the interior drone was too much. The Super 40 was just right for me.

I have been watching alot of youtube videos haha. Im just tryin to find that perfect sound and its hard with the 4.0 to find something thats loud, throaty and deep that still sounds good. from what iv heard though I think the flowmaster 40 gives closet to that.

I was in the same boat as you my friend. That’s why I fully redid my entire exhaust from the manifolds back because I was getting tired of the stock piping. My favorite set up ended up being an offroad Y pipe, single Flowmaster Super 40 exhaust, and a single 2.5” tail pipe out the rear. Deep, throaty, loud, but not too loud.

I think thats my best bet to save up a little more money and just replace all the stock piping rather just try and cut and weld the muffler in.

hello to all this is my first post I have to agree with tgreene92 make your own intake just did one on my 99 ex 4.0 for about 80.00 with filter. I also had a magnaflow muffler and tailpipe installed and what a differance these 2 mods made I now have a smooth idle and its more responsive. I feel your paying for the name on these intakes

Agreed. K&N and other fancy jive intakes are all name and hype. Spend the money on a good AMSoil filter and create your own piping. You'll be happier in the end

Only thing I would do differant would be get a better maf adaptor I used a spectre from AZ works on 2000 and up but got it to work. Now waiting on my SCT SF3 to get here form Henson perf and get my custom tunes should be here monday I ordered it friday, THIS WEEKEND IS SO LONG

For the custom intake tubing should I just try and replicate the bends from another brand name explorer intake, or is there like a layout online anywhere where I could have some guidance? Iv been lookin but I havent been able to find any, but ill keep searching

What motor do you have? If you have the 4.0 SOHC I could tell you what bends to get

Would it be cheaper to buy one of the cheaper intakes off of ebay and just buy an amsoil filter to put on the piping from an ebay kit? Did you guys make your own "heat shield" to go between the engine and the filter or do you leave the filter open in the engine compartment?

I had a cheap ebay intake on my v6 Dodge Dakota a few years ago and it helped a little bit, I just had the filter sitting in the area where the old air box went and left it all open under the hood.

For now on my 4.0 SOHC explorer I just purchased an amsoil reusable filter for the stock intake, hoping that might help it breath a little better. I will probably change that out later on for a bigger intake with a cone filter

I have the 4.0 SOHC as well

This is what I used in order form TB to air box: PN 8208 tube kit, PN 8718 6"straight, PN 8705 MAF adaptor, PN 8138 filter you will also need a 5/8 and 3/4 id rubber gromet for valve cover breather and IAT hoses. Drill 2 1" holes in the 6" straight for the gromets to install clamp rubber to TB at end of elbow remove the other 2 pieces that came in the kit install the grometsin the 1" holes I put the 5/8 one close to the elbow and 3/4 close to end of 6" install MAF adaptor then install filter CAUTION this MAF adaptor only works with 2000 and newer MAF and with adaptor provided you will only be able to get 1 screw in to hold MAF but this has been fine and working ok for me. All PN's are from AZ and are spectre performance parts. Look for the gromet At AZ next to the PVC and fuel filters section. Hope this helps
Cost about 90.00
