What actual resukts does one get from using an aftermarket MAF? What increase in power? How do they affect gas milage?
Thanks....

I don't have an aftermarket MAF, but based on what I have read here from those that do, I think the MAF is one of the last mods to do. It gives a little boost, but not as much as adding a larger throttle body, intake (such as KKM), cat-back, and chip. Everything adds up though, so if I had all of the above mods, then I would look to a larger diameter maf.

Then the claims from the aftermarket manufacturers are all invalad?

Well, I haven't seen their specific claims, so I can't say if their claims are invalid or not. Besides, I bet the effect of a MAF is greater if you have other intake mods like a K&N. If you put a hi-flow MAF with a stock airbox I bet it wouldn't do as much.

But again, I can only report on what others have said. I did not say larger MAF's don't do much. What I said was that based on what people say here, other mods did more for the money for them; In other words, a KKM and a cat-back did more than a MAF did. A larger TB did more than a larger MAF did. That's why I said it appears to be one of the last mods people do. But like I said, since I don't have a larger MAF on my truck I can only report what I have read here in the past.

Maybe someone who actually has one on their Explorer can give you a better idea of the effect of a larger MAF.

To quote from Explorer Express >>The Hi-flow Mass Air Sensor will make a solid performance improvement - horsepower gains of 5% on normally aspirated 4.0s to a whopping 9% with a supercharger. This part should be on your hp wish list. Includes electronic module that has been specially calibrated to perform with stock air box*, K&N air filter and stock injectors for easy bolt-on horsepower. Very simple installation - no adjustments required<<

I'm contemplating getting this but am wondering if there is anyone here that has noticed any type of improvement whether performance or gas mileage gains. Even SOTP gains is enough for me. Anyone have experience with the Granatelli MAF? I've heard Corvette owners have experienced some slight gains. Have
any Explorer owners?

I have a Vanir(Pro-Flow adjustable) 70mm that I just installed yesterday. Seat of the pants I would say that it is one of the better mods I have done. I believe that it brought all off my other mods together. If you have other mods then a MAF calibrated for them is the only way to go, if its your only power upgrade then I would think the money would be better spent elsewhere first.

The stock MAF is around 55mm and opening up the intake tract is worth something, but the real benefit is calibrating the MAF sensor to the "new" engine.

I have a .030 over engine with an aftermarket cam, 63mm Tb, headers, Cat back, Cone filter. The MAF was calibrated by Vanir, and the set points seem decent at the moment. If I get some time and money I may take it for a dyno tune see if there is any tweeking to be done, but I think Sven has done a good job with the settings( also marked the MAF for larger injector settings if I upgrade)

The Vanir is adjustable and I would recommend that to anyone, so that you can tune if you do other mods in the future, the tunability is worth the somewhat higher cost IMO.

Good luck.

i would recomend the Pro-m 75 mm one i felt a big difrence with it on a customers ranger we all so did a chip and TB as well that truck runs really well with those mods we are putting headers and a t-5 converson with in a week or so and then comes the vortech.

SteveVB,
Would you recommend the Vanir Pro Flow with my mods done so far? Where did you get it and how much did it cost? How is the unit adjustable and can I do the adjustments myself? I don't quite understand how it can be tweaked. Do I also have to replace my TB at the same time?

I paid 310 or so with shipping.

I would think that the stock MAF and computer can adjust for the mods you currently have, but I would check with Sven at Vanir he has the experience.

The adjustments are on the MAF electronics, two pentometers to adjust the fuel trim Rich/lean for an idle circuit and a high speed circuit. Just need a small slotted screwdriver to turn them. The idle can be set and checked with a volt meter, the high speed setting needs to be calibrated with an A/F meter or a EGT gauge. Thats where the dyno testing would come into play. I had Sven set the unit given the modifications I have made since he has the information. If(when) I change something in the future I can have a run on the dyno to see if I need to adjust the signals the MAF sends to the computer to optimize the fuel/spark delivery.

Which one will I benefit from more: a larger MAF/TB or headers? Please consider I already have a KKM, Superchip and cat-back.

i have the vortech 73mm MAF. Not worth the money. For the moeny you would be better with a chip. I would put the MAF towards the bottom of the engine list. What i can say is that i can tell the most difference with the Vortech maf at freeway speeds. The throttle is better. Its a good addition if you have a lot of engine mods. I would do other things before i would buy the MAF
