It’s sometimes the simple things.
Cleaning the MAF sensor can do wonders, if you forgot…..forget…or don’t know.

My 97 SOHC is always a pita with that rolling idle.
I did a quick MAF sensor clean and we seem to be back to normal.
There were not “goobs of soot” on the filament, but now they are shiny.

If you keep everything handy, it takes less than to 10 minutes. You don’t even get dirty......at least some of us hahaha

Just a thought or friendly reminder…somethings you can’t say enough times…I think?

PS What fertile mind made the decision to use those dumb screws that hold it in. Are they bizarre or what?

Quick tip: A quick touch of the Dremmel and you can get those suckers out with a flathead screwdriver. You do not need that special tool.
 






If you keep your eyes open at swap meets or whatever
...a set of the saftey torx tips are only a couple bucks.

Dremmel will work too.........
(I think the dremmel is one of man's greatest gifts to man) :D
 






Dremel IS awesome, but go ahead and buy a tamper proof torx bit set. It is totally worth having.

There is a place in Louisville that sells a complete "safety bit" kit. It has all the torx, square, pegged, tapered, etc bits (some I bet none of you have ever seen before!) for about $15. I would be willing to pick up sets and ship them out for some guys if you need... Long as I get my end covered...
 






I stripped one of the screws, i bent the bit on the shift motor (it seemed to be security torx) and i tried the mas, go figure, screws almost toast... and i seriously need to clean the mas!

I'm with you...I went to sears today to pick up their set of 5 torx security bits for $10; I ended up finding a better buy on a Craftsman driver with 20 bits including the security ones for $20...:) You just don't know when you'll run into security screws so IMO you're better off buying the tool and reusing the original screws when possible.

bumpin this thread up for those that may have experienced the same problems i was having. I have had a sound that was almost comparable to having a marble bouncing around in the engine block. It has beeen getting worse and worse over the last few months. I also had some extreme loss of power on acceleration (also when it made the noise) and poor gas mileage. I used my trusty dremel on the torx bits and used my flathead screwdriver to take the bolts out. Let me tell you, those filaments were nasty! i culd see the stuff on there thick. Used some electrical contact cleaner on them and they are nice and shiney. I had the negative terminal disconnected on the battery the whole time and put everything back together and fired it up. I took it down the road to a long stretch (no houses or cops) and put it to the boards. Let me tell you, she runs like a brand new truck! My power is there and I have no noise! This noise had really been bugging me to the point that I had been considering getting rid of the truck. I hope to see some mpg increase back to where it used to be and love the fact that that noise is gone. I am one happy camper now. I plan on doing this pretty often (every other oil change) just to keep it in tip-top shape. If it wasn't for this forum I would never have figured out anything having to do with the MAS. I really love this forum! :D
 






Solve the problem once and for all. Grind them so you can use a flat-head screwdriver. Total benefit for me since my MAF is an ongoing problem (possessed by evil).
 






Marbles in the engine sound= detonation. Often it is mistaken for a mechanical problem with the vavlvetrain. It is actually a sawtooth waveform caused by a pressure spike that forms before the ignition front from the combustion. Yours was probably a result of the incorrect air/fuel ratio resulting from the MAF sensorbeing covered.
 






That is what i figured was causing my noise.
