4 months ago I repalced the MAFS which was 12 years old. Seemed like a good idea at the time

In the past month the engine has been running really rough, dying out at times, lousy gas mileage.

I got an OBD 1 diagnostic tool in the mail today. Hook it up and it spit sout 157 and 158. They translate as:

157 (R,M)
Mass Air Flow signal is/was low or grounded - MAF

158(O,R,M)
MAF sensor is/was high or short to power - MAF

I assume I should replace it? I tried unplugging it, unplugging the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes, etc.

Who would have thunk a genuine Ford part would die after only 4 months. It worked fine at first but seems to have had a gradual death. Too bad. I'll put up another tomorrow. Most annoying part is the place I got it has no branches where I am now and the place is 1200 miles away.

Did you contsct them? You might be able to mail it back to them if it's covered by a warranty. It sounds like the plenum wires might have broken. Was anything sprayed into it?

no. I just unplugged the old one and plugged in the new. I unplugged the negative battery terminal and all was fine for 3 months.

I drive a lot so sending it back and waiting for a new one is difficult. They are in Boston, I am in Chicago.

darnit, i threw one out on monday, took a ton of stuff to the dumps.....

a freind of mine had a problem with his toy acting funny, sounds liek the smae symptoms, turned out, somehow that some of his mafs wires one day got frayed and freaked out.... the maf itself was fine, and nothing happened to the computer, jsut ran funky

granatelli

I replaced it and all the problems have gone away. No more check engine, rough idle, lousy acceleration. I guess it was just a dud.

thanks everyone.
