I started the evening in a great mood, I was going to tinker with the X a little. Put on the new swaybar link to replace the broken one from Saxon 1, and try to figure up a new way to keep them in place while disconnected. I also was going to change the seal on the front of the power steering pump, all relatively easy tasks, until...
First I cut the $&()@#$ out of my finger trying to pull the P/S pulley off, does anyone know what the little plastic piece is that sticks out of the radiator right by the overflow hose????
Then I decided well ok I am Band-Aided and ready to go, so I finally get the pulley off and start removing the seal, it was stuck on there like you would not believe! So i decided to leave it alone for a while and mess with the sway bar links. First I smashed the )$(@$#@ out of my other finger trying to pry the old broken link end out of the mount, then I finally got the piece out and dropped it on my foot!
Well I am geting tired and feeling sorry for myself so I am gonna give the ending here!I finally got everything done and decided to go do a little flexing with the rear sway bar off and the rear shocks diconnected(which need to be longer) well I got some amazing flex when all of a sudden BBBBOOOOOMMMMMMMM my rear glass shatters, I guess it was too much body flex for the glass to handle??? Hell I dunno, but it sucked so I spent half an hour trying to pick glass fragments off the road or onto the side of the road, and then another 20 minutes at the car wash in the dark trying to vacuum out the glass! Next time just leave the darn thing alone go home after a long days work and have a cold one!

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall...

Dang man that just sounds like a horrible day... Sorry to hear about your rear window... See if your ins will help out or cover it...

I know the feeling

I've been there many times while working on my truck. That rear glass sure sounds strange. I have done plenty of off-roading in my rig and I do hear a lot of squeeking while going through obstacles but I never even thought about the possibility of loosing my rear glass. Frame takes all the beating........ check your body to frame bolts and make sure they're tight.

Later,

At least you got all that bad luck out at one time :):)

I know that on dodge rams if you flex the front too much the bumper squeezes the headlight and can shatter the lense

My dad had an 89 Bronco and one day he got in it and closed the door and the back glass imploded... strangest thing I'd ever seen... I guess when the glass gets ready to go it takes the smallest thing to make it brake. It may of had a chip or small crack in it and with that curved glass it doesn't take much to make it shatter. But now that I think about it the Bronco had flat glass b/c it rolled down into the window. Huh, oh well.... maybe you'll have better luck tomm...

We had an 89 Blazer

And one day out of the blue...SMAAASSSHH!!! The glass just exploded! Didn't fall off, or have loose brackets. It exploded as if it was holding back too much pressure. Luckily I was standing next to the truck and not behind it!

One time one of the glass shelves in my dining room exploded. Glass went everywhere. We were outside in the garage at the time, and we heard it loud and clear. Everything on that shelf broke, and stuff on the shelf below. Homeowners ins paid for it.

Anyway, we called up the glass people and they said, "OOPS!" They said that sometimes glass will have inherent flaws in it and spontaneously shatter. They said it happens to about 1 in 100,000 panes of glass and you can never predict it. It can happen more often in irregular panes (ie curved).

Makes you think, doesn't it?

if you jack up a corvette w/o opening all the doors hood and rear hatch and having the windows rolled down all the windows on the car will blow out.... This is a mechanic/ professional trick of the trade..... like you cant take the wheels off the car if you dont know about opening everything before jacking it up....

My Explorer can do that too...

...not really

great... our winshields are curved!!!!

the rear glass and side windows are all made of tempered glass... basically, the glass is under extreme internal pressures... it's called pre-stressed. That way, if there is one flaw that gives way, the whole thing disintegrates. It's a safety thing... think about pane glass or picture glass... if you were in an accident, those little glass "marbles" that form are MUCH safer than the large SHARP shards that pane glass turn into when broken.

As for the front windshield, you've got nothing to worry about... it's not tempered... it's actually a laminate (i.e. a sandwich) of glass on the outside and inside surfaces with a layer of rubber in between (actually, it's called Poly-vinyl-butyrol). The PVB stretches to 100 times it's original length without experiencing plastic deformation. (so it springs back) that's why a crack can run all the way across the windshield without the glass exploding... the PVB in the middle holds it together, maintaining visibility. Imagine if the windshield blew out like tempered glass at 90 mph if you got a stone chip!!! I cringe at the thought!

Curved glass has nothing to do with it.... it IS more prone to disintegrating when it's formed AND tempered, but have you ever seen the side windows against the c-pillars of the first generation Tauruses? You know, that little curved triangular shaped piece? I saw a guy not only drop a 1 lb steel ball on it, not only stand on it, but all 170 lbs of him BOUNCE on it!!! I couldn't believe how tough that pane was! It's all about the chemistry and the manufacturing process they use to make it.

(I took a tour of the Ford Glass Research Labs in Dearborn a few years back... :) Glad to see I still remember some of the info... :) )
