'98 Ford Explorer Sport
My wife and I just bought a 1998 Explorer Sport. It looks like it's in great condition but we still want to take care of it before we run into any problems. It has 150,000 miles so we've already had a few things done like change the oil, transmission fluid, and rotated the tires. We'd like to get some other things done or replaced like the battery, timing belt and whatever else comes to mind. Is there anything that you can recommend that should be fixed with a truck with these many miles on it. Do Ford Explorers have any common problems that didn't have any recalls issued? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Michael

Did you check the condition of the differential fluid? Air filter? Spark plugs and wires? Radiator coolant? How are the brakes? How does the serpentine belt look?

Good luck with your new ride ...

We'll be getting a tune-up done soon so that will take care of the spark plugs and the wires. The brakes seem fine but I will have to make sure that the other things you mention get looked at. Thanks.

At this point in mileage, it would be an excellent idea to check upper and lower ball joints as well. If wear is noted, I recommend you replace them with serviceable parts from MOOG. These ball joints have grease fittings, unlike the OEM parts which are permanently (LOL) lubricated.

my 91 only has 99k miles :D
