Hey, I have a '98 XLT 4.0 SOHC w/ just over 100k miles on it. I bought it used about 6 months ago and dont know anything about the past maintenace history.
First off, is there a timing chain or is it a belt in the truck? And does it have to be replaced at around 100k miles.
Secondly, I am planning on changing the auto tranny fluid and was wondering if it is worth actually flushing out the whole system, or if a change is enough. Also, should I drain the torque converter as well? Should the tranny fluid filter be replaced and if so, are there gaskets i need to get for it?
Also, what else should i service? I was planning on changing the diff and transfer case fluids as well already.

Thanks a lot.

I would do a complete auto transmission fluid change, I also would replace the ATF with a full synthetic product. Its always wise to replace the filter.

Good luck....

Do you know if there are any more gaskets i would need if i replace the filter? Or just the main one for the pan.
And, what fluid would you reccomend using?

I don't know right off hand about the gaskets, sorry,

I use Mobil 1 ATF, as well as Movil 1 in the rear end and in the motor ( 0 w 30 ).

Good luck.....

why, if you don't mind my asking, do you use 0w30 synthetic in such a hot climate?? is your engine running supertight clearances or did you pick the quarts up for an unbelievable price?? the manual says 5w30 is preferred and most manuals suggest heavier oils under high heat or load conditions. just asking...

Because I want the better gas mileage it provides.
