92 manual tranny
In my state, if you have an OBD2 vehicle and have a check engine light, you truck will not pass emissions.

How is this related to trannies ?

Well there is a 96 v8 explorer for sale that I want to buy. It has a bad tranny. I am anti auto so I want to buy it to convert it to a manual and sell the 95.

I am thinking taht the tranny swap will trigger a check engine light and make me fail the emissions test.

Is there a way around this ?

Any info is apreciated.

Since they have a check gauges and check engine light I wonder what they would have to say if the bulb was burned out on one of them and not replaced?

1) Here in MA, the Inspectors have a computer that is linked to the State, and it downloads your OBD-II data. A burnt bulb won't work.

2) Removing the trans will trigger a CEL on the 96+ V8s with the 4R70W. However, with some clever wiring, or an ECU swap, you could work around this, but it won't be easy.

Good post ! Same way in Georgia

I dont know where I could get an OBD2 ecu for a manual and a 302 ?

Your best bet would be to contact a custom computer chip/flasher programmer. A few of them advertise on this site.

You could also try converting to EEC-IV, and using a 94-95 Mustang EFI system.

A Mustang T-5 with the Advance Adapters kit would work, or anything from a Full Size ford, such as what's offered on the F150/F250.

You might need a body lift to clear the tunnel, and an addition transmission support bracket in case the new trans mount does not line up with the 4R70W mount.

that would be bad ass though to have a manual 5 point oh!!! what tranny are planning on swappin' in?

Yeah I know. It would be a nice upgrade from the 4.0 I got now.

I think I would go for the hardware off a 93-95ish f150 with a 302. I'd probably dump all of the AWD stuff up front as well for and SAS.

It would be sweet and as good on gas as my 4.0 is.

This obd2 stuff is really messing with my mind however. A truck that cant pass emission will do me no good as it cant be tagged in my State.

A way around this would be to bolt the cab of my 1995 X (an OBD1) onto this '96. On Obd1's emmisions are done thru what comes out of the exhaust. CEL or not if your numbers are good, you pass. That could be an option but's starting to be a lot of headache for what it is...

BTW: Did they offer 5.0's in 1995 (obd1)?

OBDII started in 1996, and 1996 was the last year of the 5.0 in the F series, Bronco, Vans, etc. They are out there...

But, I'd still contact a computer tuner, I think i'd be your simplest option because then you wouldn't have to touch the engine or wiring harness.

That explorer got sold today so I guess it wasn't meant for me.. :(
