As I was driving around yesterday, I got to thinking... since our expo's auto trannies are computer controlled, is it possible to wire up some sort of override system, that allows you to control shifting, like some high end cars that have push button shifting options with their autos. I'm mostly interested in this because i used to drive a manual, and i just think it can be a lot easier on the tranny, and make the driving more enjoyable, since the driver can see thing like hills ahead and know when it's best to downshift and when it's not. so any opinions?

Yes, its possible to do this with a scan tool - my scan tool will allow you to switch the solenoids manually. Its not meant to replace the PCM - it is for diagnostic purposes.

There may be some aftermarket controllers that will do what you are asking.

It's possible to make internal damage by manually controlling solenoids while driving, as in the case of the TCC solenoid. The 5th gear on the 5R55E is actually a couple of different sections engaging simultaneously, so it's not like there is a specific solenoid for that gear. If there is some aftermarket controller designed for this purpose, as Dogfriend mentioned previously, then it would be possible. The term for those transmissions with the controls on the steering wheel is a semiautomatic transmission.

Yes, I should have pointed out that just because you can do something doesn't necessarily make it a good thing to do. ;)

The Rotunda Transmission tester allows fully manual control.... but you wouldn't want to make it a habit to drive using it and twiddling a dial to shift gears.

Well, I just wanted to use it in highway driving, to keep the hunting for gears minimal on hills and things like that. If i were to use something like this, will it cause internal damage over time just from occasional use like long trips and things, no city driving?

I believe that Bauman (sp?) makes a manual controller for the AOD series, and I have heard that someone makes one for the 5R55E, but don't know who. I also don't know what the PCM is going to do with something like that installed. I do know that it sure doesn't like not seeing a transmission.

Ya, but I don't need another one right now. If the tranny ever dies i might do a swap....on a side note, I might be getting a 79 bronco for a trail rig
