I have been reading on the net about Mustang owners modifing thier MAS. They are removing the center post while leaving only the sampling tube. They say it's like buying a larger MAS. Here is a link to a site with instructions on doing it. Give me your thoughts before I attempt this.

How is it going to react to the increased air-flow. It was originally calibrated to a certain air-flow. It can now allow more air through, but the calibration curve doesn't go high enough to take advantage of it. To me it sounds like the engine would run lean since it is getting more air, but the electronics aren't telling it to get more fuel. I will wait until someone else tries it first and posts their results. If it works, I would probably try it. I'm not going to be first.

The other possible problem might be the sensor wires are extrememely fragile. If you aren't careful you may be forced to buy a new MAS.

I read the link and the theory seems sound. It appears that the post is there to quiet the intake and if that is indeed the case then there is no engine performance "need" for it to be there. That being said, I do not remember there being a post in the middle of my MAS. I could be wrong but I don't know if this applies to a 4.0L Explorer. I may try it on my Crown Vic though. ;)

So do you think it would be ok to cut the post out and it won't screw with the calibration? My 96 is a 4.0 and it does have this post.

I guess it is really up to you. Just make sure you dont cut out the wrong thing. Hmmm... maybe my memory is fading. I just might have one of those posts in there. Only looked at it the one time. I'll have to check. Probably due for a cleaning again too.
