mass air flow sensor symptom

with engine running i disconnect m.a.f engine dies.engine running i plug it in it dies.could this be the source of my engine stalling and bad fuel economy and smell.

Clean it up, see if it makes a difference but it sounds like it is affecting something.
Sometimes it's not related though, check vacuum leaks first and such. Cheaper and easier things first, more expensive and extensive second.
