I going to be driving my Ex in a very hot, very dusty (more like pumice) area later this summer. It's going to be too dusty to drive with the windows down, so they will be up and the A/C will be on.

I think I read somewhere that with the A/C set to Max A/C I'll be recirculating the air in the cabin. If that's true, then I shouldn't be sucking dust into the cabin thru the hood vents, right?

Also, will it be OK to tape over the hood vents to keep dust from settling in and blowing dust all over the cabin when I eventually switch back to regular A/C?

that is my understanding of the MAX A/C setting.

I see no problem with taping over the vents myself. BUT, there are a myriad places for air and dust to enter the vehicle. Check all the seals around the windows and doors, maybe put a bit of light grease on all the weatherstrips to help seal them. Good luck with keeping it air tight.

Max A/C does indeed recirculate the air in the cabin.

DO NOT DO THIS!

The vehicle is required to have positive air flow through the cabin to avoid exhaust (carbon dioxide - think death) fumes from entering.

Even on Max a/c, every vehicle will have some sort of relief of the positive pressure caused by the Max a/c setting. I generally use the fresh air setting when I initially climb into the hot vehicle. I crack the rear windows about an inch or so, and place the settings on the fresh air setting for a couple minutes. After the hot, musty, and stale air has been replaced and pushed out by the fresh setting, I then close the windows and go directly to the Max, (inside) air. This is more efficient due to the a/c unit re-circulating somewhat cooler air rather than the hot outside air. P.S. my son, who plays high school ball often will climb in the passanger side and take off his musty, smelly ass feet and stink up the whole cab. This calls for the Outside air for sure! lol:bsnicker:

I frequently drive and play in the Nevada deserts where 3' deep silt beds are the norm. In fact I like driving thru silt beds. After a pass or two thru a silt bed, your rig looks like it just ran the Mint 400 desert race. My Sport Trac has seen its fare share of nasty deep silt beds over the years. Good luck and let us know how the taping the vents thing goes.
